Study Guide
1. History
Since we kicked off with the first semester of 2011, we've run four study sessions over two years.
The sessions covered:
2012 Semester 1 / Introduction to HCI (Kim Jin-woo)
2012 Semester 2 / The Design of Everyday Things (Donald Norman) + mini project
2013 Semester 1 / Service Design Textbook (This is Service Design Thinking)
2013 Semester 2 / Morning session: UX Design Communication. 2
Afternoon session: turning qualitative UX research into quantitative—statistics and methods
We—no, we—want to run our study as a kind of service itself. That means everyone joining is both a team lead and a PM. If you see things to improve mid-session, please share your thoughts anytime. Thank you.
2. How the study runs
1) Preparation: Presenting team
(1) Form teams of four, grouped for one week at a time.
(2) During the week, meet online or offline,
and prepare the study and workshop content for the assigned range.
(3) On the offline meeting day, briefly sum up and present the assigned range.
2) Preparation: Everyone in the study ^^
(1) Read the content to be covered this week.
(2) Write the most impressive passage on a sticky note and bring it.
3) On presentation day: session flow
(1) Share personal updates from the past week.
(2) Presenting team runs the session. (Study starts)
(3) Everyone shares what they wrote on their sticky note.
(4) The presenting team sums up the full content and presents it.
(5) The presenting team splits us into teams and runs a workshop on their prepared topic.

4. Study Rule No.9
1) Let's keep the study fun and engaging rather than stiff.
2) We want the study to feel real and grounded—bringing in actual cases from our day jobs.
3) We build a diverse personal network.
4) We turn what we learn into artifacts. (Dropbox)
5) The format is: study your assigned part of the book, find cases, present, and discuss.
6) We're intelligent folks, but we also fall under the 'human' category and make mistakes,
so to minimize those, we'll collect a small fine for absences.
(1) Tiered absence fines:
- If you contact the treasurer directly and give advance notice [by Monday 10 PM], you get three free-pass absences.
- Notifying after Monday 10 PM, or more than four absences, is a 10,000 won fine.
(2) Tiered late fines:
- 1,000 won per 10 minutes / capped at 3,000 won.
- But if you contact the treasurer directly with advance notice [by Monday 10 PM], it's a free pass.
(3) This is a study we all squeeze in amid busy, tiring times.
If you value others' time, try not to be late or absent.
7) Questions and discussion during the study—respect and show consideration for each other.
(A carelessly thrown stone can actually kill a frog, or cause real distress.
Feel free to discuss, but let's avoid overbearing tones or forcing our own views.
For people like that, let me recommend a speech contest.)
8) The study is everyone's learning, not a solo thing.
Join actively and carry a sense of responsibility for what you take on.
9) A study is also the start of a relationship.
Through the study, let's try to grow 'good connections.'
