The Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong): Self-Cultivation
Self-cultivation is the foundation of all governance. Before one can govern others, one must first govern oneself. Before governing oneself, one must understand one's own nature.
The Doctrine of the Mean teaches that sincerity is the way of Heaven, and the pursuit of sincerity is the way of humanity. To be sincere is to be true to one's nature. To pursue sincerity is to choose what is good and hold fast to it.
Self-cultivation requires constant reflection, unwavering commitment to truth, and the humility to recognize one's own shortcomings. It is not a destination but a lifelong journey.
