The Doctrine of the Mean: Even Giving Can Become Violence
There is a profound paradox in generosity: the act of giving itself can become a form of violence. When we give without understanding the recipient's needs, when we give to satisfy our own desire to be generous, when we give in ways that create dependency — our giving becomes a burden rather than a blessing.
True generosity requires wisdom. It requires understanding not just what to give, but how, when, and to whom. It requires the humility to recognize that our help might not always be helpful.
The Doctrine of the Mean reminds us that balance is essential in all things — including kindness. Excessive giving without wisdom is as harmful as withholding help. The middle way demands that we give thoughtfully, with awareness of the full consequences of our actions.
Sometimes the most generous thing we can do is step back and let others find their own way.
