A really good post, so I am clipping it here..
For planning work in the IT industry - especially around the metaverse and 3D space generation - this feels like a truly important insight! I literally found sentences that sent chills through my whole body. Hah - moving..
The surface has depth. Fine details are mostly made on vertical planes. Movement and stillness are organized along a plane, and what controls that flow are the walls that stand perpendicular to the plane.
An expression is not completed by surface texture alone. It is completed, like eyes, mouth, and nose, through three-dimensional organs of the skin. A boundary surface of a space gains its distinct identity through the details of the surface.
The columns and walls that form the basic elements of a surface depth not only carry out structural functions but also organize the order of a space. Structural elements are planned at the size and spacing needed to support the space, and at the same time re-tuned to match the character of the space. The final size and spacing of columns and beams set the rhythm of the space, giving it a kind of musical order.
The surface has varying thicknesses. As the depth of the surface deepens further, the thickness of the surface becomes a layer of the space itself.
A third space emerges at the boundary of inside and outside. In what we call an in-between space, more active acts unfold.
Walter Benjamin called the loggia - created at the border between house and street - a place where the god of the city is present. It is a place of leisurely rest and exchange. A person standing on a balcony will eventually strike up a conversation with a neighbor passing on the street.
