Good Company Notes (03 — Choi Hyung-wook)

The era of social value.

  : Too idealistic. The important thing for a company is

    the pursuit of profit… can it work if the fundamentals

    aren’t resolved?

  : TV — “The Qualities of a Leader.”

Good Company = a company you want to work for.

A company you want to work for = a Good Company?

People are basically selfish. So why did they think that way? Why did they act that way?

Benevolent stewards.

 - Active stewards (who step forward on their own).

 - Passive stewards (today’s stewards).

Good employers.

>> SaaS (domestic: Jennifer Soft).

  : Make employees happy, and they’ll take care of customers on their own. (One-third of their staff is in their 50s.)

>> SEMCO

  : Cut 60% of executives.

  : No reports, no departments, no set work hours.

  : Again, it’s about trust in employees.

>> Mirai Industry (Japan)

  : A company that treats its staff as human beings.

  : “They’re humans. Not raw material — humans.”

  : People are the end goal.

  : President Yamada (“the fan-section manager”).

  : Growing faster than Panasonic.

* Even in the past, they weren’t 1st, 2nd, or 3rd

  but they delivered sustainable growth.

* Daniel Pink

   : intrinsic motivation.

   : Feeling that the work is your own and

      that it’s something you’re good at.

* Experimental group (take as many as you want) vs comparison group (fixed number).

 : “Draw what you want” — from EBS.

 : Experimental group — works hard even through the break.

 : Comparison group — finishes in about 15 minutes, then plays.

* The old man living by the vacant lot vs the kids playing basketball.

 : Noisy kids playing basketball

   → the old man buys them drinks.

 : Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation get swapped.

    - People lose the meaning of their job!!!

* Finland

  - A country with report cards but no class ranking.

  - Compare with your own past performance!!!

OECD achievement (Finland — Korea)

OECD satisfaction

*

When you can work with autonomy over your own work, and feel that you’re developing, work becomes play.

*

Learning goal — when lacking, reflect on yourself.

Performance (results) goal — “it’s because I lack the ability.”

External motivation —

Internal motivation — from the self.

* IBM: the Good Co Project (6 items)

            (evaluates companies with 100–1,000 employees).

* Jennifer Soft

   : runs with 20 people, 7 of them staff for employee welfare.

* Future Designers

   : the Good Company Manifesto, a campaign.

   : so that companies can together become sustainable.
