<Why did they drink three cups of coffee but pay for seven?>
While we had entered a small cafe, placed our order, and were walking toward our table, two people came in and ordered.
"Five coffees, please. We'll drink two, and leave three on hold."
They paid, took only two cups, and left.
I asked my friend, "What on earth is a coffee left on hold?"
"Wait and you'll see," came the reply.
More people came into the cafe. This time two women ordered two coffees and left. The next customers were three lawyers, and they ordered seven coffees. Three were for them, and four were coffees left on hold.
I was still curious about the idea of suspended coffee, but soon my attention shifted to the bright weather outside the cafe. Then suddenly a man dressed in worn clothes, looking almost like a beggar, entered the cafe and gently asked, "Is there perhaps a cup of coffee on hold?"
It was very simple. People had paid in advance for a cup of coffee for neighbors in difficulty who could not afford even one warm drink.
The tradition of suspended coffee began in Naples, Italy. Now it has spread across the world, and in some places people can leave not only coffee but also sandwiches or full meals on hold.
