[ Living as Someone Who Shows Interest, Not Someone Who Receives It ]
John Gardner, even at the age of eighty, never neglected his lifelong routine of learning and teaching. Through the following maxim, he taught his students the proper attitude of a learner:
"You must not live as someone who receives interest. You must live as someone who shows interest."
The shift from seeking attention to giving attention changes everything. It transforms relationships from transactional to genuine. It turns every interaction into an opportunity to learn rather than to perform.
Most people spend their lives trying to be interesting. The truly remarkable ones spend their lives being interested.
